Nineteen years old, twelve senior minutes before Saturday, and now the name on everyone’s lips at Kingsfold Park. Tom Ellery’s first start ended with two tries, a Man of the Match award and a standing ovation from the covered terrace.
His first score came on 23 minutes — a 40-metre interception finished under the posts — and his second, a diving effort in the corner on the hour, proved the difference in a 31–26 win over Southfield Stags.
“He trains like he plays — full tilt, no fear. The senior lads have taken to him instantly.” — Alan Mercer, Head Coach
From academy to first team
Ellery joined the academy at fourteen and top-scored for the colts two seasons running. Saturday’s call-up came after first-choice winger Josh Farrell failed a late fitness test — and the rookie grabbed his chance with both hands.
With Farrell still doubtful for the Northgate derby, expect to see the number 11 shirt on Ellery’s back again. On this evidence, the terrace has a new favourite.
